Children's Dentistry Scarborough

family hugging | dentist office scarboroughYour smile is one of your greatest assets, and giving your child the gift of a healthy and beautiful smile that brings them confidence is priceless.

Children's dentistry is important because kids have different needs than adults do when it comes to their teeth. Working with a dentist who is welcoming to children helps them have positive experiences at the dentist and sets them up for a lifetime of healthy and happy smiles.

At Dentistry at Alton Towers, we love caring for children and invite them to start their dental journeys as soon as their first teeth arrive or by their first birthday.

What Happens at the First Dental Visit?

Bringing your one-year-old to the dentist may seem early. Still, it allows our dentists to begin forming a relationship with your child, helps them acclimate to the dental office, and will enable us to monitor their oral development.

The first visit for your little one will generally be counting and examining their teeth, answering any questions, and addressing parent's concerns.

We'll continue to see your child every six months for checkups. As they get older and more comfortable in the dental chair, we'll eventually incorporate teeth cleanings into their visits.

Why Are Baby Teeth Important?

Parents often wonder why it's essential to protect baby teeth that eventually fall out anyway. The truth is that baby teeth play an integral role in your child's oral development and have a few important jobs to complete before they fall out.

  • Holding space for and guiding adult teeth when they arrive
  • Helping your child develop their first words
  • Introducing your little one to the enjoyment of solid foods

Keeping baby teeth healthy and intact ultimately helps your child's oral development.

Protecting Small Smiles

Our dentists in Scarborough may recommend treatments like fluoride and dental sealants to protect your little one's teeth as they grow.

Fluoride helps to strengthen and protect developing teeth. At the same time, dental sealants block the acids and bacteria that cause tooth decay by providing a clear protective coating on the chewing surfaces of your child's teeth.

If your child decides to participate in sports, our dentists can recommend the right protective mouthguard to prevent tooth damage or injuries without impacting their performance.

We'll also evaluate your child for orthodontic treatment when the time comes. Many children can benefit from early orthodontic intervention, so our dentists will evaluate your little one for orthodontic treatment around age seven or eight.

What Happens During My Child's First Dental Visit?

Sometimes, parents feel that bringing their child in at age one is too early. However, early dental visits allow us to build rapport with your little one, which helps them acclimate and have successful dental visits in the future.

We'll spend time introducing them to the dental chair, and parents are welcome to stay in the room so they feel comfortable. During an exam, we'll also count their teeth, which allows us to begin monitoring their dental development.

Your child should continue to visit their children's dentist in Scarborough, ON, every six months. These early visits are also an excellent time for parents to ask questions and raise concerns.

As children get older, we'll incorporate teeth cleanings, fluoride treatments, and eventually x-rays into their preventive dental visits.

With Your Family Every Step of the Way!

As your child gets older, we may recommend treatments like dental sealants to protect their teeth from cavities and mouth guards if they participate in sports. We'll also evaluate them for possible orthodontic treatment if needed.
